Before struggling men, women and children walk through the doors at Haven of Rest it can be hard for them to think too far into the future; it’s almost impossible to plan ahead in life when you’re unsure where your next meal will come from or if there will be a safe place to sleep that night. Haven of Rest helps these individuals meet their immediate needs and gives them the chance to look towards the future. The Mission encourages individuals to continue their education, look for a job, find an apartment, and surround themselves with positive influences and role models.
As men, women and children become confident in their skills and begin their lives outside the Mission, however, it can be difficult to put their plans and strategies into practice. Temptation can sneak into lives in unexpected places like old friends who rekindle bad habits, hangout places that encourage destructive behavior, or even self-doubt and feelings of loneliness can increase the chances of relapse.
To battle relapse tendencies, Haven of Rest has developed the AfterCare and Alumni Programs for men and women who have left Haven of Rest to start their lives anew. These programs provide a safe place to talk about the struggles of living on their own and reinforce the good habits and lifestyles they adopted during their stay at the Mission. This is achieved through Bible study, prayer, and fellowship events. Philippians 1:6 reminds us that God is always standing by us: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
It is Haven of Rest’s mission to assist the men, women and children coming to the Mission and equip them for success for the rest of their lives. The AfterCare and Alumni Programs create the opportunity for this continued success. During their stay at the Mission, we help individuals strive for a brighter future, but with AfterCare and the Alumni Program we encourage them to thrive on their own and have the opportunity to walk with Christ for the rest of their lives. Please pray that God will continue to bless Haven of Rest to equip the men, women and children moving on from our programs into life outside the Mission.
