"I came to the Mission on my own, and I'm so glad I did…I've been able to get away from the temptations that have really hurt me. I have a better perspective on my life and what God wants for me."
John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
On Memorial Day we honor those in our Armed Forces who have lost their lives so that we can enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness every day. Their initial sacrifice to serve our country and ultimate sacrifice, their lives, has helped to secure our freedoms here in the United States. It is hard, at least for me, to wrap my head around this type of sacrifice. These brave men and women put their lives on the line for the safety of millions of people they will never meet. As I reflect upon their bravery and sacrifice I cannot help but think of Jesus’ sacrifice for us.
Just like the soldiers, Jesus laid down His life for us and for our freedom. But instead of Earthly liberty, Jesus has won us everlasting freedom from sin and the devil and He knows each of us by name. He suffered death and hell so that we, the body of Christ, can have everlasting life in heaven, worshipping the Lord.
At the Mission, we strive to make sure that servicemen and women who have come home safely stay that way; whether they are struggling with homelessness, hunger, poverty, or hopelessness. The staff who serves at Haven of Rest endeavor to let everyone know the good news of John 11:25-26. I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.
Please pray for the families of those who have lost loved ones and are in mourning this Memorial Day. Let them feel the comfort of our Lord God who has taken away death’s sting and brings everlasting life in heaven.
