“A STRONGER WOMAN”

Doretha is changing women’s lives in our community!

“You never know what someone is going through or what they’ve been through.” Doretha puts these words into practice every day. Working at Haven of Rest, she knows that a compassionate, listening ear  goes a long way to make someone feel seen and loved.

“I listen to people and talk to people every day, both clients and staff,” says Doretha. “I like to help people.” As a House Supervisor at Harvest Home, Doretha makes sure everything is kept in order and carried out properly — safety, meals, chores and more. But her position at the Mission goes beyond daily tasks and management.

“This is a job where people need me,” Doretha says. “God has stored His Word in me, and I get to give it to the women. He led me to this job.”

Every single woman or mother who comes through our doors for help has a different story to tell. But one thing is the same — each one needs a safe place where she can be fully loved as she starts a that process.

Having endured her own disappointments and struggles in life, Doretha knows that compassionate care, encouragement and Christ  are exactly what these women need. “My husband was an alcoholic,” she says. “But the things I went through in my life with my marriage and my kids made me a stronger woman.”

DON’T GIVE UP

Now, Doretha gets to lift up the women of Harvest Home, showing them through her story that God is faithful and there’s redemption on the other side of disappointment. She remembers a time when a Harvest Home guest had a turnaround moment.

“This lady had stopped praying and given up on God,” says Doretha. “But coming here, with all the people speaking the Word of God into her life, it made a better woman out of her. She told me, ‘I’m glad I came here. I am stronger in my faith.’”

CHANGING HEARTS AND LIVES

Doretha will tell you that Haven of Rest is a place where hope is restored. Every day, she gets a glimpse of the transformation taking place in our community. “This place brings change into people’s lives,” she says. “It offers so much to people who don’t have anything. Every little bit you give counts.”
